he smell of chocolate draws you into the tiny shop, where even if you weren’t planning to, you can’t help but buy some of Serenade Chocolatier’s delicate Viennese-style treats—especially its signature Viennese truffle, a blend of dark and milk chocolate from Belgium with hazelnut. Lush dried fruits dipped in chocolate, creamy truffles, fresh marshmallows, thick fudge, crunchy bark, and more fill the neat display case, all made on site. Serenade Chocolatier was opened by the late William “Uncle Bill” Federer, an Austrian Holocaust survivor and son of a Viennese candymaker, who had sung as a boy with the Vienna Boys Choir and who named his shop in honor of the Austrian composer Franz Schubert. When he retired, Federer taught his secrets to successor Nur Kilic—a onetime electrical engineer.
