Meat and Greet
A friendly butcher shop with an exotic selection
J
ohn Dewar & Company owner John Dewar says his shop is about what buying food was like before supermarkets wiped out neighborhood grocers. But your grandmother’s grocery store was never like this. Dewar’s sells exotic and high-end meats, cheeses, and the fixings, from Hudson Valley foie gras to cheesecake from the Carnegie Deli. There’s caviar, duck confit, quail eggs, caviar, and premium, 100-year-old Italian vinegar, plus Angus beef and exotic meats and game including wild boar, goose, pheasant, ostrich, rabbit, and antelope. But the best secret about this place is the oven-ready selections, including Niman Ranch precooked St. Louis ribs. All the meatcutters here have worked as chefs, and recipes are posted on the website. You’ll come off like a gourmet, and all you have to do is turn on the oven. Jacobson
Dewar’s posts manager's specials and occasional discount coupons on its website.
