Cocktail Mix

The home bartender's hidden supply stash

The Boston Shaker

W

hen you’re ready to move beyond the keggers and the Jager shots, your first stop for sophisticated cocktail supplies and guidance ought to be the Boston Shaker. Arrive sober, because one ill-timed lurch and you’d pass right by this tiny shop, crammed with an improbable wealth of utensils (and great housewarming gifts) that range from wooden muddlers to colorful lemon squeezers to metal stirring spoons of different lengths and sizes, plus standard supplies including strainers, peelers, mixing glasses, and ice chippers. There are recipe books and classes in the art of cocktail-making taught around the kitchen-style counter in the back, which will prepare you to best take advantage of the wealth of bitters, muddlers, and rare cocktail garnishes like wild hibiscus flowers also sold in this small space. A Boston shaker is a two-piece cocktail shaker that requires a separate strainer or for the user to hold the top against the rim of the mixing glass to pour. There's no consensus about how it got the name. One theory holds that people thought it looked like a New England lighthouse; another that it was first used on Boston-based passenger ships.
