The art of packing

oston is actually enjoying a real summer for a change. The last few weeks have been sweltering; you can't help but dream of a cool Cape breeze or a ferry ride to the Cape or Vineyard. I know I have been.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that one of my favorite aspects of a weekend away is the packing. On my last trip to Provincetown, I took the Fast Ferry (is there any other way to go?) Oh yes, and a bike. My goal was to fit two days' worth of clothing and a towel in a backpack, not an easy task.
Even if it is 80 degrees at Race Point all day, by the time the sun goes down, you'll need a pair of long pants or a light sweater. My dad always told me, "As long as you're comfortable, you'll be happy." I've always taken these words to heart, especially when I travel, but they can lead to overpacking. There's nothing I hate more than an unworn outfit. On the other hand, pack too light and you'll be bored with your options. Or, worse yet, have to to repeat.
A few weeks ago I read about a study from Clothes Show London that found women spend more money on a vacation wardrobe than on the trip itself. This doesn't surprise me. As the getaway date approaches, my desire for that perfect assortment of options increases.
Important requirements regarding weather and occasions have to be considered. Rompers are my go-to item this summer: trendy, cute, and versatile. For footwear, I recommend black jelly flats. They're perfectly suited for bike, beach, or bar. A sunglass wardrobe is also a great way to mix up your mood, and takes up little room in your luggage.
There is certainly an art to the perfect pack, but it's different for everyone. I can't help but envy those people, usually men, who say, for an entire weekend, "I'm bringing one pair of shorts, one T-shirt, and one pair of shoes." I might like to be that person someday. But for a now, a small suitcase will have to suffice.
