though you might not equate a great deal on a Marc Jacobs handbag with a charitable donation, Cambridge-based Bidding for Good strives to make that connection. For the most part, shopping is considered a selfish sport, but it doesn't have to be. The online-auction company has already generated more than $80 million for nonprofits, and has some pretty exciting offerings lined up for the spring. Previous Bidding for Good auctions have included stays at the Liberty Hotel, Cartier gift cards, and even a trip to NYC for Fashion Week.
Of course, the number one strategy for buyers, whether at an-end-of-season sale or when hitting the outlets, is to arrive early, and this rule also applies to online auctions. Timing is everything (did anybody else see how quickly Alexander Wang sold out on Gilt Group recently?). And Shop Secret can get you in first.
Since you love insider information ... MySecretBoston.com has the exclusive on a number of upcoming auctions before they go live. The auctions benefit English At Large, which provides free English and literacy instruction to adults in 20 Boston-area communities.
Dinner for six at the Beehive, perhaps? Or maybe you'd rather enjoy Red Sox opening day box seats?
Bid away! And keep coming back. We'll have first dibs on more new auctions coming up.
May the best shopper—and worthy charity—win.
