I
t doesn't matter how big or small your closet is if you can't find anything to wear. In my case, I use every inch of space, but I only wear on a regular basis about a third of what I own. I've come to realize that I forget about a lot of favorite pieces simply because I can't see them when I open the closet door. I also find I buy a lot of things that don't get much use before I grow tired of them. And I know I'm not the only one.
Outfit planning, shopping, and closet cleaning are a sport for some but a complete hassle for a lot of people. For some others, these things are a job.
On Thursday I met up with J. Sybylla Smith at the Liberty Hotel to celebrate the launch of her personal wardrobe styling service, Go To Design Studio. Smith was preparing for a fashion show later that night, which featured outfits she'd put together from a variety of Boston stores (some of which rarely lend out clothes) along with pieces she had made herself, including a chocolate brown chiffon corset dress that looks like a piece of couture. (It had better, after 200-plus hours on the sewing table.)
Smith loves fashion, and an understanding of individual style is evident in her own manner of dress: Richard Chai ruffled tunic dress, leggings, Tod's metallic ankle boots, and stunning black diamond jewelry. So it's not really a surprise that, after years of experience in the fashion industry, from FIT and 7th Avenue (where she designed her own label) to a career in commercial and editorial styling, Smith is establishing Go To Design Studio.
Not everyone loves to shop (gasp!), or has the time, so why not leave it to a professional? Maybe you've graduated and need to transition your wardrobe from student to young professional. Perhaps you're just ready for a makeover. In a nine-hour session, Smith will go through your entire closet, make 20-plus outfits from your existing options, and take you shopping. She'll know the stores and designers that suit you, which saves you time and money. Plus you'll come away with a personalized look book, just like in Clueless! Packages start at as little as $175. See the website for more.
Smith's mission and passion are seamlessly intertwined. She realizes that a creative, well-edited, and expressive wardrobe doesn't necessarily come easily, especially if you shop at only one store, and buy outfits right off the mannequin. But that doesn't mean it's not attainable. Her goal is to create educated consumers, who, with her guidance, will define their personal style. And she also holds a master's degree in social work, which is pretty much the perfect combination for a closet therapist.
