dgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, the son of itinerant actors, and wrote his first book here. But he never liked the city, often lied about his birthplace, sharply criticized the Boston publishing elite (he called Bostonians “Frogpondians”), and is far more widely associated with Baltimore, which makes an industry of Poe. In 1827, Edgar Allan Poe was posted to Fort Independence in South Boston as an army private and based his story "The Cask of Amontillado" on a real-life incident that happened there.
