The little-known site of one of the world’s most important inventions

Alexander Graham Bell

Y

ou may have been talking on your cell phone when you walked past the site of one of the most important inventions of all time: the invention of the telephone. There’s a plaque commemorating Alexander Graham Bell’s first successful transmission of sound on June 2, 1875. Bell’s lab was on the fifth floor of what was then 109 Court St. Marcus

Shhhh! An immigrant from Scotland,
Alexander Graham Bell was a professor
at Boston University. The “decibel,” or
unit of volume, was named in his honor.

Shhhh! The sound was the twang of
a clock spring. It was not until almost a year
later that Bell shouted, “Mr. Watson,
come here, I want to see you” on his telephone.

Shhh who knew

When Alexander Graham Bell died on August 2, 1922, all the telephones in America were stilled for a minute in his honor.
