First Pitch

Visit the site of baseball's first World Series (it's not where you think).

B

aseball’s first World Series was played in Boston—but not at Fenway Park. It took place at the Huntington Avenue Grounds, now the site of Northeastern University. And hidden behind Northeastern’s Cabot Cage, you’ll find a piece of granite shaped like home plate in the exact spot as the original, and a statue of Cy Young, who pitched for the Boston Pilgrims against National League champs Pittsburgh in a best-of-nine series starting on October 1, 1903. Boston won in eight games. Marcus

Shhhh! Cy Young pitched the first
perfect game of the 20th century on this site
against Philadelphia on May 5, 1904.

Shhhh! The Pilgrims later became
the Red Stockings, which space-constrained newspaper headline writers shortened to Sox.

Shhh who knew

More than 18,000 fans, double the stadium’s capacity, came to see the first World Series at the Huntington Avenue grounds, many standing in the outfield behind ropes.
