A tiny club with no cover and live music every night
T
he stage at Toad can fit barely fit a mid-sized drum kit, let alone a singer. But while the sound in the shoebox-sized room is loud, somehow you can still talk to the person next to you without yelling, a stiff Captain and Coke comes only a few cents more than one of the few exotic microbrews on draft, and there’s never a cover. All of these are the perfect ingredients for a good night backed by a solid live soundtrack. Music bounces off the deeply stained wood floors and walls and drifts out into Porter Square seven nights a week. But this isn’t one of those bars that skimp on talent. Bands are loyal to Toad and are generally rewarded with long sets and multiple return visits. Feel-good singer/songwriter Tim Gearan held down a Monday-night residency for more than 10 years. Wallace

Porter Square was named for the former Porter Hotel, after which the Porterhouse steak was also purportedly named.
