A basement bar with good bands and a surprising past

t’s easy to lose your way at Precinct. The quirky layout, with its numerous dark corners and unexpected dead ends, makes you wonder what was there before (believe it or not, the Somerville Police station). It’s one of those places where you might have to ask, “Am I allowed back here?” when fishing for the door to the bathroom in a sea of empty kegs. But buried deep within this basement complex, past the sports fans chugging to every pitch in the front bar, is a mysteriously large back bar that’s well worth finding, a place where live music can breathe freely, far from direct sunlight. Solid bands play just about every night and the best stick around for residencies. It’s hard to blame them when Precinct offers 20 drafts and none of them are Bud Light. There’s also an outdoor beer garden open when the weather permits. The Old Speckled Hen, a rare draft in these parts, always goes down nicely. Wallace
is open until 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and until 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
