Bingo Night
Forget Rock Band. Come play Rock ‘n’ Roll Bingo.
T
he local dive bar Model Café is no secret to the Allston hipster crowd. But only the savviest know about Rock ‘n’ Roll Bingo Night. Female DJs spin records and the bingo wheel, and liquid prizes are redeemed at the bar. You never know who might stop in: Surprise guests have included the Foo Fighters and Pat Smear of Nirvana. Another secret: On the first Tuesday of every month, Model hosts its Rock N' Roll Social, a gathering of bloggers, DJs, promoters, and booking agents. Moravek
in the basement of the Model.
Shhh who knew
Nearly 60,000 people play bingo every week in Massachusetts, but that's a steep drop from the 200,000 who played 20 years ago, thanks to the indoor smoking band, competition from casinos in Connecticut, and the aging of the game's traditional clientele. That, in turn, has cut into the proceeds of the Lottery Commission, which collects a 5 percent tax on bingo revenues.
