A little room with a big draw

he secret of the Enormous Room is in finding it. All that marks the entrance is a red silhouette of an elephant. Well, there's another secret, too: This hole in the wall is the opposite of enormous. But it thinks big. The Enormous Room is one of the area's only, if not the only, venue that features a DJ seven nights a week, and a different DJ every night of the month, with progressive music in a loung-y, North African-inspired, friendly space—lots of exposed brick, cushions, and couches—with dancing, great appetizers and creative cocktails. It's like going to a loft party with a (little) cover.

Shhhh! Enormous Room partners Gary Strack and Frederick Carret met while attending Harvard's Graduate School of Education and Divinity School, respectively. They also own Central Kitchen, downstairs.

The Enormous Room is technically in the part of Cambridge called Area 4, between Mass. Ave. and Hampshire Street, whose X-Files designation originated when Cambridge's Old Port was divided up and numbered for planning purposes. Other sections got new names—Area 5 is now Cambridgeport, for instance—but Area 4 stayed Area 4.
