Deep Roots

An earthy band relives the fun simplicity of Dispatch

S

ticking to the basics has never been a problem for the Adam Ezra Group. Its sophomore album, appropriately titled View from the Root, looks at life in retrospect and surrounds the contemplation with earthy percussion and acoustics reminiscent of Dispatch. While front man Adam Ezra sings with a flare of innocence and simplicity (“I rock in the cradle of the stars tonight”), his lyrics reveal a deeper passion and hints of anger (“I would excavate my sorrow/tear it from my inside through my spine”)—a clash that only comes with life experience. From upbeat folk rock, a bit of funk and soul, to stomping Deep South blues beats, Adam Ezra Group rejects materialism and sticks with the simple things. Vallejo

Shhhh! And, in fact, Ezra has spent time in several countries farming, working the recess shift at an elementary school, and providing relief in Kosovo, among other adventures—most of the time while living in his van.
