Sweet Week
It's party city around here.
Thursday, February 4, 2010
Well, we had one hell of a kickoff for this website Monday night at the Foundation Room at House of Blues with a few hundred of our closest friends. Top chefs, musicians, bloggers, retailers, publicists, writers, and other in-the-know types joined us for some Narragansett and CodeBlue and vodkas, a live set by TAB the Band, and some high-energy networking. There are pictures of the party on our Facebook page.
Then we had another party Thursday night at Saint. There were models (Zhana K. and Nomin G.) parading down the catwalk in the best from Boston designers Emma, Cassie Locsin, and Ideologie, all to the beats of DJ Theo A; free CodeBlue and Sapphire "Secrets"; and a discoutned cover for MySecretBoston users. Night owls take note: This is only a taste of things to come from our team. Become a fan on Facebook and we'll let you know about them all. You'll find pics from Saint there, too.
Super Bowl Sunday
Just in time for the Super Bowl, we’ve got two new features in our Top Secrets section this week giving you the lowdown on what to do this Sunday. Even if you’re frustrated that the Pats won’t be trouncing Miami, you can show your patriotism and root for other local teams … and we’re not just talking about the Celtics or Bruins (the Sox, well, that’s sort of intuitive). If you’ve come to terms with the Pats’ absence and just want to watch the game, we've got some great off-the-beaten-track places to do it.
Not a sports fan? Tired of the cold and dark? Check out our "Boston Confidential" feature on 11 ways to leave town—without leaving town.
In Your Ear
In House at Ryles Jazz Club (Friday, February 5, 9 p.m., $10)
Confession: I’ve got it bad for soul music. I’ll leave the rock ‘n roll, reggae, and other stylings to Wally (as he is our resident expert and, in general, has impeccable taste), but I will never pass up the opportunity explore new soul, seek out new jazz, and go where no funk has gone before…
Just kidding (although I do love the jazz flute breakdown at 1:47…and the matching long-sleeved shirts, although I’ll defer to Cassie on fashion issues). I’m talking about the one-and-only In House, known for whipping up an exotic blend of steady groove, hip hop, reckless psychedelia, and jazz flourishes that’ll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Featuring Randy Roos, occasional guitarist of the ever-impressive Club d’Elf, In House will take you beyond the rings of Saturn faster than a wily Chris Pike aboard an imperiled USS Enterprise. Don’t listen and drive: The jam is intoxicating, uplifting, and overwhelming, all at once.
The Indobox live at Harper’s Ferry (Saturday, February 6, 8 p.m., $10, 18+)
Fusing snarling guitars with dancerock sensitivities, the Indobox lays down focused synth lines over driving drum beats for the ultimate in party grooves. Their new release, Adventure Rock, promises to be just that, so come get a taste of the Indobox’s rock odyssey early. It may not be the journey of a lifetime, but you should certainly make it the journal of your Saturday night. Get your tickets here.
Bottoms Up
Some drinks are so good they deserve their own holidays. In Peru, Saturday is Pisco Sour Day, celebrating the South American variation on the whiskey sour introduced by American expatriate Victor V. “Gringo” Morris at his eponymous bar in Lima in the 1920s. According to local tradition, all pisco sours must be finished as a mark of respect when the Peruvian National Anthem is played. Years ending in zero (like, I don’t know, 2010?) are apparently of special significance, but if you don’t feel like traveling all the way to Peru to celebrate this fantastic South American standard, Orinoco in Brookline Village and the South End has you covered.
…And I’m Spent
Economy got you down? Not sure how you feel about Obama’s spending freeze, government regulation, Ben Bernanke, or “American socialism?” It’s okay, we don’t get it either. Thank God for informational rap songs. Keller
