Hearin' the hub, the music blog by Jeff Wallace

he festival scene has been kind to New England this year. Nateva was a Fourth of July weekend wonderland of live music (read our review here), and just last weekend, the Life is good Festival brought acts like Ben Harper, Guster, Mavis Staples, Dr. Dog, Galactic and a bunch of other heavy hitters to the Blue Hills in Canton.

Now it’s our turn. That’s right: We’re having our own festival. Thanks to the fun people over at Community Rowing in Brighton, we’ve been given the chance to showcase some of our favorite local and regional bands at unique site on the banks of the Charles River, outdoors, and for free. It all will go down on Sunday, September 19. Mark it down in Sharpie on your calendars, or set your cell-phone alarms (well, maybe not)—whatever it takes to remember. Tell all your friends to tell all their friends. And no singing Morphine’s “You Look Like Rain” between now and then.

Without further ado, here’s the lineup for the inaugural Rumble on the River, Sunday, September 19, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Harry Parker Boat House in Brighton. And did I mention that it’s free?

Rubblebucket (festival headliner) - 4:50 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Rubblebucket (above) is a perfect band for the new decade. These guys (and girl) are as hot as it gets right now. The eight-piece group combines the infectious, time-weathered rhythms of West Africa with a world of influences that include everything from Bjork to the Talking Heads, to even Rage Against the Machine (guitar riffs only, not the militant spirit). Indie sensibilities tie it all together, but there’s plenty of jam-friendly tactics to keep the kids dancing from Brooklyn to Vermont (and well beyond). Forty-five thousand miles of touring last year alone didn’t hurt to spread the word either. The band may have relocated to Brooklyn, but its Boston ties still run deep—singer Kalmia Traver and bandleader and trumpeter Alex Toth are former members of John Brown’s Body, a well-oiled reggae act based in Boston that pulls crowds all over the world. For a dose of what Rubblebucket’s live show is all about, check out my review from their early May run at Church. Also, we managed to catch up with Traver as the band began 2010. (Read that interview here.)

Gentlemen Hall - 3:20 p.m. to 4:50 p.m.

Rock music is easier to dance to these days. Thank Passion Pit, MGMT, LCD Soundsystem and all those other bands that know how to spice up a thick groove with soaring synth-lines. Gentlemen Hall got that memo, which also places the utmost importance on bringing the heat live. Two years, one EP, and a ton of shows later, the band has carved its reputation by winning over one dancing body at a time. Gent Hall just spent considerable time in the studio with producer Michael Seifert (Regina Spektor, Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony, Tori Amos) recording its full-length debut. Expect those cuts to go to wax by year’s end.

Banana Phonetic - 2:15 p.m. to 3:05 p.m.

Banana Phonetic’s influences span a half century of music and thought. It’s a sound for people who love the crackle of vinyl, but also for those who can’t deny the convenience of an iPod. My Morning Jacket, Pavement, Wilco, and the Flaming Lips are all tweaked and tossed around, but so are the Beatles, Steely Dan, and the Talking Heads. Listen to the band’s debut EP, The Western End, and you’ll see how the Boston-based foursome molds its idols into something new. But see the band live, and you’ll get even more. Nothing is off limits (including trance jams and slap-funk instrumentals that could’ve been served as meat on Blood Sugar Sex Magik).

Buru Style - 1:05 p.m. to 1:55 p.m.

Boston is blessed with a wealth of talented reggae artists. A lot of them get around, too. Drummer Bill Carbone and the collective known as Buru Style are a prime example. Band members come from all over New England to convene for shows, which are more or less celebrations of the versatility of the genre—a share-it-if-you-got-it mentality. Backbeats that come from down-home Delta funk (a la the Meters and Galactic) and soul grit (Curtis Mayfield) are all thrown into the ring. Carbone holds it all in place, but leaves room for the large group (usually eight or nine members strong) to run free. It makes sense that he’s one of the most respected drummers among local musicians. Buru Style has its own impressive resume, too, having spent considerable time as a behind-the-scenes force for singers like Toussaint the Liberator, Ras Coley, Dion Knibb, and Sasha Marley. At the Rumble, they’ll be performing alone and with local reggae singer Anjanai. Even without a vocal, this band can carry the party with its rowdy instrumentals.

Duppy Conquerors (Bob Marley Tribute) - noon to 12:45 p.m.

Bob Marley wrote timeless songs. The grass on the other side will always be greener (and hopefully smokeable) when any of the legend’s tunes are burning nearby. The Duppy Conquerors have been paying their respects every Monday night at Precinct, offering-up sets full of Marley’s greatest hits and the deep cuts, too. The nine-piece band features some of the finest Boston musicians and is led by Jeff Robinson on Sax and keys. An accomplished actor and playwright, Robinson fronts the backing band at the notorious poetry slam on Sundays at the Lizard Lounge.
