Special meals made with beer in mind

I
always thought the seven deadly sins were an interesting concept. Here's a handful of feelings you can’t have, or else—wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy and gluttony. Which (except for wrath and envy, because they’re no fun) has exactly the opposite effect. Am I right? You kinda want to go out and commit them, don't you?
Temple Bar (above), between Harvard and Porter squares in Cambridge, offers up a few of those cardinal vices tomorrow (July 22). Since no one said anything about religion at the Temple, who’s with me for a little gluttony?
Working with small-batch ales and lagers from local craft brewer the Berkshire Brewing Company of South Deerfield, executive chef Michael Scelfo and bar manager Hugh Reynolds promise a lively four-course pairing menu ($39), featuring some summer favorites sure to spark a little lust among foodies and beer lovers.
Start off with Jonah crab and zucchini fritters with smoked tomato aioli and micro basil (tinier than regular basil, perhaps?), paired proudly with Berkshire Czech Pilsner. Follow up this light dish with a nice grilled lamb sirloin with capered wheat and smoked lamb belly, mint salsa verde, and a Lost Sailor IPA. The third course is perhaps my favorite all around: coffee house porter braised short ribs with herb and salsify frites and Sudbury radish slaw, paired with Shabadoo black 'n' tan.
Room for dessert? Have a slice of opera cake with almond joconde, coffee buttercream and bittersweet grenache, and espresso with a nice glass of raspberry barleywine-style ale.
After all that sinful culinary imbibing, I might need a nap. Oops: sloth. Maybe I should go to church instead.
Small Bites
Stats Bar and Grille, an offshoot of J.A. Stats Restaurant & Bar, has opened in South Boston, with a menu of comfort and upscale food.
Also opening this summer: North End restaurateur Nick Varano of the Varano Group expands his hospitality dynasty to the waterfront next month with Strega Waterfront at Fan Pier. The 5,700-square-foot restaurant will offer indoor and patio dining, a bar, lounge seating, and an intimate wine room.
