Fork & Dagger the food blog by Cheryl Fenton

ure, I’ve been yelled at before. In fact, I think my three-year-old screamed at me today. Throughout my years, I might have even been called a name or two (gasp!). But the extent of any unpleasantness toward me thankfully ends there. I’m happy to say I’ve never had a pot thrown at me. The dinners I make usually get eaten, not spit out in disgust. And I haven’t been given an unpleasant nickname (that I know of, anyway). You can take all of this to mean I’ve never been a contestant on Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen.

If you're not in the know, or channel-surfed past this show because of all the yelling, let me explain. Take one foul-mouthed, short-tempered British celebrity chef host (the handsome, but terrifying Gordon Ramsey), add 16 culinary expert contestants, a few cooking challenges, and a hefty grand prize (usually a restaurant), and, behold: Hell’s Kitchen. A nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to cook there.

Now one of our very own has stepped up to the plate, and you can join him for all the fun, in person, Tuesday (June 1). That's when Gargoyles on the Square in Somerville’s Davis Square will close to the public at 5:30 p.m. as executive chef Jason Santos (above) invites you instead to celebrate something few people can: that he managed to get out of the hottest kitchen on TV without being burned.

Shocking blue hair and all (oh, what fodder for Ramsay’s clever but nasty quips), Chef Santos was one of the 16 contestants competing on this season of Hell’s Kitchen. And on Tuesday he'll be offering up the dinner that he served on TV.

Gargoyles' regular menu, one of amazing modern American cuisine with Asian inflections, won’t be available that night. But fear not. You’re in great hands. Santos’s three-course, prix fixe dinner ($50) will feature dishes he prepared for Ramsay on the show, along with wine and new signature cocktails.

No matter how many pots I threw, I couldn’t frighten anyone enough to get you the actual menu. It’ll be revealed that evening.

After dinner, join Santos for a 7:30 p.m. cocktail reception and viewing party for the premiere of this season’s show. It begins at 8 and is one full hour of fascinating train-wreck entertainment—bedazzling and belittling all for your pleasure on three big-screen TVs.

The question of the evening will be—did Santos win it all? If I couldn’t get the menu out of the man, his lips are sealed about this, too. Regardless of the outcome, we’re proud of this brave chef. Because as we all know, if you can’t stand the heat…

For tickets, which are going as quickly as Ramsay’s fuse, call Gargoyles at 617.776.5300.
