Go Fourth
Fireworks, food, beer, and baseball
Wednesday, June 30, 2010
A
pple pie, baseball, hot dogs, fireworks. Patriotic tastes, sights, and sounds that all Americans consider proud parts of their citizenship. I realize I left out reality TV, Ford trucks, and People magazine, but I’m not sure those are what our forefathers had in mind when they created this land of the free.
Show your true colors (red, white, and blue, of course) and snag a ticket to some of the best seat in town for Boston’s fireworks show on Sunday—the Fourth of July.
From 6 p.m. until the midnight hour, Boston’s Baseball Tavern is hosting a “Roof Deck Cook-Out”. You can’t get more all American than this—cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chicken wings, potato salad, peanuts, steamers, watermelon, and Jell-O shots. There’s no apple pie, but when there are Jell-O shots, who needs (or even notices) apple pie?
The piéce de résistance? Wait, that’s French. I mean, the best part of this evening’s festivities? All of this uber-Americana continues under Boston’s famed fireworks as they snap, crackle, pop, and bam in celebratory unison for our country’s 234th birthday.
You’ll also be a fly-ball’s throw away from one of the best ballparks in the U.S.A. (for those of you just tuning in to Red Sox Nation, that’s Fenway Park). Spectacular views of the home of Boston’s Boys of Summer gives a patriotic salute to one of America’s favorite past-times.
Happy Birthday, America. Have a Jell-O shot. Because even after a bunch of hot dogs and potato salad, there’s always room for Jell-O.

Small Bites
The East Coast’s first Leisure Station has landed in Kendall Square. Straight from Taiwan and one of only a few in the U.S., this modern shop offers “boba” (tapioca ball) teas, milkshake drinks, and smoothies, as well as unique toppings including aloe vera, chocolate pudding, and leechee jelly. The new bubble cakes are made-to-order treats the size of quail eggs with a custard center.
Noche has opened in the South End. With a cool underground location, a funky contrast of white furniture and dark wood, and a lounge-like vibe, Noche features a menu showcasing new American cuisine.
In honor of our nation’s 234th birthday, Summer Shack is offering its Red, White and Blue Angel Food Cake with mixed berries for $2.34 with a lunch or dinner entrée. Valid at the restaurant's Hingham, Back Bay, and Cambridge locations, this offer runs throughout the weekend.
Also just in time for the Fourth, Union Bar & Grille chef Steve Sherman has brought back his summer barbecue menu, served a la carte or for $29.95 for three courses, plus free grilled flatbread pizza at the bar every day from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Joe Bono, proprietor of Al Dente in the North End, has opened Benevento's Original Brick Oven Kitchen & Bar next door, at 111 Salem St.
