Wing and a Prayer

A shrine to Boston baseball, with championship wings

McGreevey's Boston

E

xactly 1,200 steps from Fenway Park, McGreevy’s is co-owned by one (and frequented by the rest) of the baseball-obsessed Dropkick Murphys and is modeled on some baseball lore—in this case, a 19th-century bar where Boston baseball fans hung out. It surrounds you with a sense of Boston’s rich sports history dripping from walls completely covered with and display cases full of really, really old photographs and baseball memorabilia. You won’t even notice any of that once the Guinness barbecue wings or tenders arrive, though. These wings are the real secret here, fall-off-the-bone, lip-smacking, Red Sox-winning-the-championship good, satisfying chicken slathered in robust Guinness barbecue sauce with the requisite celery and blue cheese on the side. Pinkney

Shhhh! McGreevey's is co-owned by
Dropkick Murphy lead singer Ken Casey and
former 3rd Bass rapper Peter Nash, who also owns
a baseball memorabilia shop in Cooperstown.

Shhhh! Like the Dropkicks’ song “Tessie,”
originally the rallying cry of a group of early
1900s Boston baseball supporters called
the Royal Rooters. The then mayor, John
“Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, grandfather of
President John F. Kennedy, was a member.

Shhhh! Look closely at the light
fixtures. They’re made of baseball bats.

Shhh who knew

The original McGreevey’s was called the 3rd Base Saloon, opened in Roxbury in 1894 by Michael T. “Nuf Ced” McGreevy and home base for the Royal Rooters. McGreevey’s nickname came from the words he used to end the endless arguments among his customers about baseball: "'Nuf said!"
