he sociable mix of students, neighborhood residents, open-mic nights, and board games is one way Clear Conscience Café sets itself apart from the big coffee-shop chains. But even more distinctive is its emphasis on fair-trade coffee and tea and locally grown ingredients in its salads, soups, panini, and vegan options. (It’s adjacent to the Harvest Co-op.) Portraits of local elementary and middle-school kids include their messages about sustainability. The open-mic nights are held on occasional Thursdays, but the schedule is irregular so call ahead if you’re a poetry slammer and want to jam in front of an appreciative audience. Araki
