Among noisy clubs, a pub where revolutionaries drank

Green Dragon Tavern

E

verybody knows the Faneuil Hall area is crowded with trendy clubs and bars. What most people don’t know is that it also boasts one of America’s oldest. The tiny, tucked-away Green Dragon Tavern has been serving up brews since the 17th century, and was the local hangout of your favorite revolutionaries (it’s where they overheard the British plan to march on Lexington and Concord). And while it’s no longer in its original site, the Green Dragon’s revolutionary atmosphere remains (although with a decidedly more Irish accent), with antique muskets on the walls, lantern-style lighting, and exposed beams that bring to mind rugged colonial days—even when the room is filled with twenty- and thirtysomethings dancing to a cover band. It’s a real throwback right in the middle of Boston’s newest hotspots. Burns

Shhhh! Established in 1654
Shhhh! John Hancock, Paul Revere,
and Daniel Webster drank here.
Shhhh! It was in the basement
of a building on nearby Union Street,
next to Hancock’s brother’s house.

Shhh who knew

Originally marked only by a copper sculpture of a dragon above the door, the Green Dragon got its name when the copper corroded to green.
