diner and ice-cream parlor with spinning stools and waitresses in skirts and aprons may sound more like something out of Nick at Night than Newtonville. Yet Cabot’s Ice Cream & Restaurant endures, like a flashback to your childhood, with enormous helpings of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and ice-cream treats so sweet that one is proudly called the Dentist’s Disaster. You don’t have to wait for dessert to indulge your inner child here. Start your day with banana-chocolate-chip pancakes, and end it with 175 or so of your friends over a Great Pyramid Sundae: 60 pints of ice cream and 12 quarts of toppings to share, piled high in colorful scoops. Or choose from among the 70 flavors and toppings including three types of fudge, gooey marshmallow, peanut-butter sauce, or crème de menthe. There are even ice-cream cupcakes, and an ice-cream “pizza,” served in a cardboard pizza box. All of it is available weekends till 11:30 p.m.—just late enough to lose all self restraint. Jacobson
