he chicken sandwich, loaded with meat, cheese, and your choice of toppings on fresh Italian bread, makes Osteria Rustica worth seeking out from among the sports bar that crowd Canal Street. Locals walk right past the Fours and Boston Beer Works knowing that, for wonderfully reasonable prices, they’re going to get a lot more food here. Osteria Rustica’s gnocchi is one of Boston’s best-kept, and best-tasting, secrets. Opening hours are sporadic—sort of when they feel like it—and there are only three tables, so get your order to go and find a comfortable spot on the greenspace where the Central Artery used to be. When it was built in 1803, Canal Street ran along a canal connecting Mill Creek to Mill Pond (now the site of the Union Oyster House) and then to Boston Harbor. The canal was filled in the 1840s.
