Good Catch

Oysters for a buck, and other secrets of a hidden bistro

Barlow's Boston

I

t's not easy to lure people to Barlow's, tucked away as this restaurant is in a little-noticed but resurgent industrial corner of the Seaport District called Channel Center. So you'll find some great secrets that make this place worth hunting down, including our favorites: oysters for a dollar each (while they last) on Monday nights, live jazz on Sunday afternoons, and its eclectic combination of Irish, Italian, and Mexican food. The restaurant is in an up-and-coming neighborhood of hot new-media startups (including Boldfacers and the invitation-only online boutique Rue La La) in cool renovated red-brick industrial buildings, and its owners have created a hip and sophisticated but relaxed bistro atmosphere that fits just right, with dark wood, large windows, bright accents, and a roomy bar. There are 30 beers, creative cocktails, and a short but sweet dessert menu. Araki

Shhhh! The parent company, Superior Dining Group,
also owns Orleans, Devlin's, and the Warren Tavern.

Shhh who knew

The high-tech neighborhood now called Channel Center was the heart of the world's wool industry from the late 1890s until the 1930s, when 70 percent of wool for the American market passed through Boston.
