Gone to the Dogs
Enjoy New England’s best hot dogs, all in one place
T
here’s one day of the year that you can go to the horse track and have nothing but dogs on your mind. The annual Hot Dog Safari at the Suffolk Downs racetrack, which began as a bus tour of hot dog aficionados looking for New England’s best, brings you all the hot dogs, soda, ice cream, and other treats you can eat, all for the price of a ticket. Proceeds go to the Joey Fund for cystic fibrosis research. Children six and younger get in free, and there are activities for them including face-painting and balloon art so you won’t feel guilty about bringing the kids to the track. Moravek
Andelman founded the event in 1989. It’s now
run by his sons Dave, Mike, and Dan.
of his son, who died at 12 of the disease. O’Donnell
owns Allied Advertising and the Jiminy Peak
and Bromley ski resorts, and is the largest
shareholder in—wait for it—Suffolk Downs.
Shhh who knew
Opened in 1935, when betting was made legal in Massachusetts, Suffolk Downs attracted its biggest-ever crowd of 24,000 to see the Beatles play on the infield on August 18, 1966.
