he father of American golf, Francis Ouimet was a 20-year-old caddy at the Brookline Country Club who won the 1913 U.S. Open, ending British dominance of golf and opening the game to the American middle class. Ouimet was the first American to be given the honor of captain of the golf club at St. Andrews in Scotland.

Shhh who knew
In 1916, Francis Ouimet was stripped of his amateur status by the U.S. Golf Association, which claimed he was using his celebrity to promote his business selling sporting goods and therefore was making a living from golf. His status was reinstated thanks to public pressure after he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1918.
