Fore Father

A museum about the pioneer of American golf

Francis Ouimet

T

he father of American golf, Francis Ouimet was a 20-year-old caddy at the Brookline Country Club who won the 1913 U.S. Open, ending British dominance of golf and opening the game to the American middle class. The Massachusetts Golf House and Museum has his jacket, medals, clubs, and other items. Marcus

Shhhh! The son of a poor Irish immigrant,
Ouimet was the first American to be given the honor of captain of the golf club at St. Andrews in Scotland.
Shhhh! The museum shares the building with
the Massachusetts Golf Association and the Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts.

Shhh who knew

In 1916, Francis Ouimet was stripped of his amateur status by the U.S. Golf Association, which claimed he was using his celebrity to promote his business selling sporting goods and therefore was making a living from golf. His status was reinstated thanks to public pressure after he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1918.
