Fit Pit
Man up and try a gym designed by a Marine.
F
orget about watching Oprah while sauntering along on an elliptical machine set to “flat terrain.” If you really want to get in shape, man up and descend into the Pit at Revolution Fitness, where a former Marine has designed a military-style training room with climbing ropes, Olympic rings, kettle bells, bumper plate, padded walls, and pull-up bars big enough for six people at a time to wonder collectively what the hell they were thinking. Try an Ass-Kicking Male Bonding one-hour private session with a trainer that will evoke the TV miniseries Band of Brothers. Upstairs, the former Metropolitan Health Club/CAC has the usual friendly fitness staff and well-coiffed customers only slightly anxious at the noise of grunting from the Pit. There’s even a snack bar called Fuel. Pinkney
Shhh who knew
The Continental Congress planned to form the Marines from the army encamped in Cambridge in 1775 as part of a plot to invade Nova Scotia. But General George Washington didn’t like the idea, so the Marine Corps was instead recruited in Pennsylvania.
