Ferry Tale

A great harbor cruise that's ridiculously cheap

MBTA water ferry

H

ere’s one MBTA route that’s worth taking just for the ride: The T’s F4 water shuttle between Long Wharf next to the aquarium and the Charlestown Navy Yard is some of the cheapest entertainment around, at less than two bucks each way—free for kids 11 and under. Want to save more? The USS Constitution at the Navy Yard is free, as is the often-overlooked World War II destroyer the USS Cassin Young moored barely 50 yards away. There’s even a free show at the aquarium. Bring your own lunch and you’ve just spent less than $10 for a day out with the family. You’re welcome. Jacobson

Shhh who knew

The first public transportation in America was a system of ferries chartered in 1630 to carry passengers between Boston, Charlestown, and Chelsea, including a three-mile run across Boston Harbor between the foot of Hanover Street in Boston and Winnisimet Street in Chelsea.
