G
allery tours in other neighborhoods may happen once a year, but the SOWA Artists Guild in the South End opens its doors on the first Friday of every month. It’s a relaxed chance to see work that ranges from handmade crafts to contemporary paintings by 30 artists. Everything’s for sale, but no one’s pushing you to buy, so you can leave with a unique new piece or just the self-satisfied feeling of having had a dose of culture. Tuder
from among the artists at 450 Harrison Ave.,
a 90,000-square-foot former mill that houses
more than 50 studios and 15 galleries.
Shhh who knew
SoWa stands for South of Washington Street, one of several neighborhoods developers have SoHo-ized. A new complex south of Harrison Avenue is called SoHa and a condo building south of Columbus SoCo. There’s a restaurant in the North End called Nebo, and a real-estate investor has proposed renaming East Boston EaBo. The idea of calling South Boston SoBo was raised and quickly dropped.
