t can be hard to truly get away from it all on Martha's Vineyard. This is an island, after all. But stick with us: The 1,000-acre Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge on the eastern edge of Chappaquiddick is another world, with ponds, cedar groves, salt marshes, a seven-mile barrier beach, and the 1893 Cape Poge Lighthouse. And while everybody else is angling through traffic on the roads or sand, you can take a two-and-a-half-hour naturalist-guided kayak or canoe tour through Poucha Pond and Cape Poge Bay along salt marsh and tidewaters that are home to ospreys, cormorants, sandpipers, surfcasters, and the occasional great blue heron. Tours leave from the Mytoi parking area, and transportation from the Edgartown ferry is available. There are also natural history tours, a fishing tour, a lighthouse tour, and self-guided tours in rental kayaks and canoes. Call ahead to make a reservation.
