Shore Start

An oceanside diner with a celebrity chef

Susan Ogan

I

t's a secret even to us how such sophisticated breakfasts come out of the tiny Art Cliff Diner, prepared by a former chef to the stars. Try the avocado, salsa, and chorizo breakfast tacos and codfish cakes with hollandaise sauce. The ingredients come from local farms and the restaurant's own herb garden, the fish is straight off the boats, and there's a kids' menu that adults will want to order from, too, with green eggs and ham and root-beer floats.

Shhhh! It's been here since 1943.
Shhhh! Regina Stanley, who worked as a chef for visiting dignitaries at Washington, D.C.'s historic Blair House, where guests of the presidents stay.

Shhh who knew

Vineyard Haven's Waterside Market, a great-smelling restaurant and gourmet food store, is a good place to get a picnic lunch of gourmet sandwiches with exotic ingredients from tapenade to mustards, fig spread to yogurt raisins and natural candies.
