Where to find iconic island photography
C
losely associated with the island in particular and New England in general through images that capture its natural beauty, star Vineyard photographer Alison Shaw now has a studio and gallery in an impeccably restored former siungle-engine fire station on a back road. You'll find her work downstairs and, usually, the artist herself upstairs in her studio; she's usually glad to show you around. The works on display change weekly based on colors (orange, say, or blue) and other themes (food, for instance), and there are also books, notecards, and posters for sale that you can actually afford.

Shhh who knew
The Alison Shaw Gallery anchors an embryonic arts district that includes the Dragonfly Gallery in a former general store across the street, which features contemporary works by local and off-island artists; and Periwinkle Studios in what was once a fish market, which specializes in fabric art. You can find the hidden-away neighborhood by walking across the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association grounds from downtown Oak Bluffs.
