ere's one of our favorite Vineyard secrets: Linda Jean's, an island of unpretentiousness on an island of—well, you get the point. Simple, friendly, and down to earth, this unlikely dive-y diner is a great place to start your mornings. (Lunch and dinner are served here, too, with simple salads, sandwiches, and burgers, but we like the breakfasts best.) Grab a seat in one of the cozy booths and try the Maine wild blueberry pancakes, or “the Mess”: scrambled eggs with spinach, onions, and Swiss cheese, served with home fries, toast, and coffee. Do what the locals do and go early (or late) to avoid the line.

Martha's Vineyard was named in 1602 by the English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold, whose mother-in-law and daughter both were named Martha. But until the 18th century some confused islanders called it Martin's Vineyard after the captain of Gosnold's ship, John Martin.
