etter known in Manhattan than among the people who live and visit Martha's Vineyard, as the Village Voice put it, the Yard is what the New York weekly calls the country's premier residential colony devoted to the development of new dance, hosting visiting choreographers and some of the nation's best dancers on a far-flung estate with a 100-seat theater and a studio. You can get in on the secret by attending the Yard's public performances, many of them free, and a summer-long dance, theater, music, and opera festival. Find the schedule here.
Shhhh! Founder Patricia Nanon danced on Broadway and the director and assistant directors include the former chair of dance at the Tisch School for the Arts and a former member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company.

One of the best secrets of the Yard is its morning yoga classes for resident artists and dancers, which are also open to the public at a surprisingly low price, and taught in an open-air studio surrounded by peaceful woods and flowers. Find more information here.
