The 200-year-old cannonball hole in a men's room

t was certainly just as memorable as “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes,” or, “Don’t give up the ship.” But the Falmouth townspeoples’ answer to the captain of the British brig HMS Nimrod when he demanded they surrender their guns during the War of 1812 has somehow been forgotten. “Come and get ‘em!” they purportedly responded. When the Nimrod subsequently fired its cannon on January 29, 1814, it left a permanent memento: a cannonball hole in what is now the men’s room of the Nimrod Restaurant & Jazz Lounge. The owner says it's a rite of passage for women visiting the Nimrod for the first time to sneak into the men's room for a peek. At the cannonball holes, he means.

Shhh who knew
Several of the cannonballs fired at Falmouth by the Nimrod are preserved in the Conant House Museum at 55 Palmer Ave., along with the ship’s log.
